Derek Vanderhorst, is obsessed with sound, he is known as a musician, sound designer and re-recording mixer for film and television. He has worked on hundreds of films including the Academy Award nominated No Country For Old Men, Hidden Figures, and most recently The Eyes of Tammy Faye. He’s the “go to” mixer for blending dialogue and music to create powerful and emotive film soundtracks, skills that effortless translate on his upcoming album, Wildflower.
Vanderhorst was introduced to music at the age of 5 with piano lessons but embraced guitar, mandolin and banjo in his teens. As a young man he toured with the bands Leaf and The Rosemarys and was managed in the 90s by Les Garland (Co-founder of MTV and Video Jukebox Network). These experiences led him to L.A. where he found his way to the film world, finding success and becoming a member of Academy of Motion Pictures, pursuits which also led him to put down his guitar for 20 years.
In 2017, Vanderhorst was diagnosed with Stage 4 head and neck cancer. Along with the threat of dying, he was told he might lose his voice and hearing. He knew then that his lifelong passion for music could no longer take a back seat to his film work. Now 5 years cancer-free, and after hundreds of hours of vocal rehab, he has claimed his voice as an Americana artist. He will be releasing his upcoming album WILDFLOWER this spring 2022 along with numerous tour dates across the country this coming summer and fall.
