Kendall Jane Meade and Byland

October 9 7:00 pm PDT

Second Stage

Doors Open: 6:30

$10

Kendall Jane Meade is a solo artist and founder of the band Mascott. Jon Pareles of The New York Times once wrote “If Aimee Mann had fended off cynicism, she might sound like Kendall Meade…turn(ing)
folk-rock into stately pop, wrapping vulnerability and longing in quietly radiant arrangements” and Spin Magazine claims Meade hails straight “from the Carly Simon School of Confessional Songwriting.“ Meade’s influences include 60s & 70s folk and pop songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Francoise Hardy, Margot Guryan, Carole King, Christine McVie, and indie pop icons like Camera Obscura and The Softies.

An accomplished singer and musician who has contributed to albums or played/sang live with Sparklehorse, Helium, The Spinanes, Lloyd Cole, Gramercy Arms, Anders Parker, Stars, and more, Meade’s original songs have been featured on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Chuck. Her most recent collaborations include songs with Kris Gruen, Leroy From The North, and an EP of John Prine covers with Jon Derosa of Aarktica. She has recently completed her new solo album, SPACE, produced by Charles Newman (Magnetic Fields, Bones of J.R. Jones, Soko) which will be released in spring 2025. This residency will debut her new material and showcase songs from her back catalog and recent releases.
She is thrilled to play every Wednesday in October at the Hotel Cafe’s second stage with her friends and favorite new artists opening each week.

Solo set by Byland

With its shrewd sonic template and Byland’s striking vocal performance at its center, “Heavy For A While”, Byland’s new record, expertly marries themes of intimacy and heartache, nostalgia and hopefulness, the quest for home and the complexity of holding onto it once it is found. At once finely etched and strikingly direct, songs like the celestial “Two Circles” and the kinetic ode to Alie’s childhood best friend, “Monstera,” are ideal distillations of Byland’s approach, balancing multiple shades of emotional nuance with an uncluttered sentimentality that ultimately leads to a greater truth.

Fueled by Byland’s spirited, eclectic musical approach, songs like “Settle My Mind” and “Postcard” are widescreen expressions of longing and isolation, weaving deep-rooted melodies, candid lyrical communication, and sophisticated arrangements with whispers of nostalgia and an unstoppable sense of forward motion. The result is a singular vision both familiar and unprecedented, bittersweet yet strikingly life-affirming.
