American Sigh, Care Again and Jeremy Ferrara

April 17 7:00 pm PDT

Second Stage

Doors Open: 6:30

$10

As art reflects life, the new American Sigh record Virtue Signal reflects a time of transition. Originally rising to prominence in West Palm Beach (now LA), songwriter Theo Matz paints a melodic portrait of a world reeling from a loss of faith and learning to find hope in the face of nihilism. The only sure thing is change, and Virtue Signal wraps meditations on a world in flux in a beguiling blend of up-tempo indie folk, second-wave emo guitar squall, and articulate, chiming melody. Built on a foundation of granite-solid songwriting (this record was written primarily on acoustic guitar), while Virtue Signal represents an evolution in Matz’ creative reality it is still, as Glide dubbed the last record, “immediately engaging and full of intricate nuance.”

A fantastic psychedelic pop album with an illuminated spirit, Sit Outside is the latest from Care Again, a project helmed by West Coast native Brandon Kerrigan. Alongside producer Dylan Magierek (STRFKR, My Morning Jacket), Kerrigan crafted the release in southeast Portland, Oregon — implementing an array of sounds led by delightful piano-conceptualized songwriting and inventive samples, alongside melodic guitar lines and burgeoning rhythmic movements.

“Certainty and clarity are like everything else, yeah, they come and go” These are the kind of gentle reminders you get when you listen to Portland songwriter Jeremy Ferrara. Regarded as “open-hearted and determinedly honest” by Americana UK, and as “exuding as much gentleness and vulnerability as anything in Nick Drake’s catalog” by Americana Highways, Ferrara has had a storied first few years. Opening for John Craigie, Field Medic, touring the US and Europe multiple times, and signing to a label, all while working as the guitarist in fellow rising star Margo Cilker’s touring band. Rarely do folk songwriters remain as centered, as earnest, and as entertaining. Ferrara comes through on his latest Darkness Is A Bright Sound with a full band heralding his philosophical delivery of songs full of gentle acceptance, and purified positivity.
