Brian Richburg Jr & Friends + Special Guests

February 22 9:30 pm PST

Second Stage

Doors Open: 8:30

$15

New Orleans Native Brian Richburg Jr. is a prodigious drummer who started honing his craft
before the tender age of 5. His musical tutelage began in his father’s church and then continued
with legendary music teacher Jerry McGowan and legendary sax man Donald Harrison Jr. With a
deep-rooted passi and exposure to his hometown’s eclectic sounds and cultural mix, Brian’s
drumming seamlessly fuses blues and gospel from church with African and Caribbean-inspired
rhythms of the New Orleans street bands.

Brian’s exceptional talent has earned him several accolades, including the prestigious
ASCAP Louis Prima Award and scholarships to both Berklee College of Music’s
undergraduate and Masters programs. Despite his young age, he has toured
extensively, performing with master musicians/artists such as Nicholas Payton, Big Chief Donald
Harrison Jr., Cautious Clay, Chief Adjuah (formally Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah), Ellis
Marsalis, Joanne Bracken, Julius Rodriguez, Samora Pinderhughes, Nigel Hall, and many others.
His impressive resume includes performances at renowned music festivals like Montreal,
Newport, Nice, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Washington D.C., Jazz a la Villette in
Paris, and Expo City 2022 Dubai.

He has also shared the stage with Grammy Award winners and nominees such as Joss Stone,
Marsha Ambrosius, Jon Batiste, Laufey, Chief Adjuah (formally Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah),
Leo Nocentelli, and many others.

During the height of the global pandemic, the world saw a great deal of global unrest. Unrest that
included the killing of another unarmed Black man which was caught on video. George Floyd’s
story created police brutality protests for months that consequently created this melting pot of
cultures blending due to the already creation of isolation brought by the pandemic. Brian thought
to have a rally that intersected styles within Black American Music with dance, poetry, and live
art. At Copley Square, about 25 of his friends and colleagues came together to protest with the
only way they know how- Their art. A writer from the Boston Globe quotes “As Brian Richburg
and New Legaxy broke into a funky version of “Come Together”, the music seemed to draw
more to the plaza, and the crowd appeared to swell to at least a few hundred people. Attendees,
nearly all of whom wore masks, danced along to the music as Richburg and band grooved…
Others stretched out on the lawn under the warm sun and blue sky, chatting with friends and
enjoying the last days of summer”.

Brian’s recent recording on Chief Adjuah’s latest critically acclaimed conceptual release ‘Bark
out Thunder Roar Out Lightning’ is a testament to his versatility and musical prowess. He
effortlessly blends the folkloric styles, ceremonial and ritual practices of the Maroon and Afro-
Indigenous Chiefdoms, and culture of New Orleans with Stretch Music, resulting in an aweinspiring
showcase of Afro-New Orleanian and West African expression where music, dance, and
cultures unite. The NY Times named this beautiful project ‘#1 Jazz Album of 2023’. Brian is also
featured on recent recordings with his mentor Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. as well as his
colleagues and rising star multi-instrumentalists Julius Rodriguez and Cisco Swank.
In addition to his remarkable achievements, Brian has founded his own project entitled
‘New Legaxy’, collaborating consistently with 5 different musicians from across the U.S.
Their sound is like no other, only to be compared to a gumbo which blends rhythms
from Congo Square, blues of Memphis, Kompa rhythms of Haiti, and the country flares
of Virginia. Brian is also a regular fixture at New York City’s Nublu Club, where he joins
a unique blend of young musicians led by Ray Angry in jamming sessions every
Monday. Although he resides and works in the city, he frequently embarks on tours
across the globe and returns to his beloved New Orleans to perform.
